Striking Oil with Josie Maran

photo 3 (3)

Josie Maran, Queen of Argan Oil, recently released Argan Black Oil Mascara. Normally, I pick up mascara at the drugstore but have somehow amassed a rather large collection of sample tubes and this was no exception.

From Sephora’s website:
A mascara that never sleeps: a highly-effective and natural, argan oil treatment mascara that nourishes, lengthens, volumizes, lifts, and curls lashes for 24 hours.

Treat your lashes to the nourishing lash-softening effect of 100 percent pure argan oil mixed with blackest-black iron mineral pigments, and infused with the lash strengthening properties of bamboo. Creamy and 91 percent natural, Argan Black Oil Mascara conditions as it coats, lengthens, volumizes, lifts, and curls, for eyes that sparkle and invite the world in. The unique formula is delivered by an innovative five-ball brush that reaches every lash.

This brush has curves.

This brush has curves.

The tube is pretty, turquoise with a black and orange chevron type design. The brush is really cool, too. They aren’t lying about the five-ball brush either. It looks kind of twisty  and it really picks up the right amount of product. The formula itself is not super thick but it has a good consistency that coats lashes nicely. I find it to really lengthen and volumize each lash, making my peepers pop. Drying time is good. You have time to build up application but don’t have to worry about it ending up all over your eyes (I’m talking to you, Rimmel!) or giving you clumps. It lasts a long time, though I don’t think it could make 24 hours. After a decent day of running around, it does smudge a bit. I can say that I don’t channel a raccoon. I also have sensitive eyes and it didn’t irritate them at all.

Top- scary eye, no mascara. Bottom- scary eye, one coat of mascara

Bottom- scary eye, one coat of mascara

photo 1 (5)

I always curl my lashes and then apply one coat to top and bottom lashes. It really works, no? My only gripe- the price. Though I love some of Josie’s cosmetics, at $22 USD you’re talking a lot of dough for three months use, if you’re lucky.

One Direction Up All Night 4+1 Eye Shadow Palette

Product provided by BrandBacker. All opinions are my own.

In my last post, I wrote about the new One Direction cosmetic line. Due out in Macy’s stores across the USA on August 11th, the line consists of three kits. (You can check out my post here.) I received a complimentary  “Up All Night” kit to try out. I was away with some friends this week on an overnight trip, and decided to try out the 4+1 Eye Shadow palette.

Clockwise from bottm left: Another World, Gotta Be You, Save You Tonight, More Than This Center: Up All Night

Clockwise from bottm left: Another World, Gotta Be You, Save You Tonight, More Than This Center: Up All Night

The palette includes four eye shadows and a glitter creme shadow for a playful look. The “Up All Night” eye shadows are a taupe with light shimmer, a very shimmery navy, another very shimmery light blue, a light pink with a bit of shimmer, and a deep glittery blue. To be honest, I was a little afraid. With the exception of the taupe, these are not colors I normally use (I wore teal eye shadow once. My husband, who could really not care about my eye make-up, said to me that he wasn’t a fan.) I brought the palette with me on the girlfriend getaway and gave it a try.

Swatches! From left: Another World, More Than This, Gotta Be You, Save You Tonight Center: Up All Night

Swatches! From left: Another World, More Than This, Gotta Be You, Save You Tonight Center (top): Up All Night

I put on some Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden- the matte nude. (I usually use the NYX HD Primer. I prefer it and it’s a lot cheaper.) I started by applying “More Than This” (the taupe shade and a wonderful song by Roxy Music) all over from lashes to my brow bone. I found it took a few dips of my brush to really get color payout. I then added “Another World” (that sparkly navy) to the corner of my eye into the crease. “Another World” was more pigmented, so I really blended and then fluffed the light pink “Gotta Be You” over everything. Then I blended. (Blend, baby, blend!)

photo 1 (4)

Pardon the lack of picture quality- I didn’t have my real camera.

In all honesty, I was not overly thrilled with the look. The taupe wasn’t very pigmented and the blue was super blue so I had to soften it. After I blended, I just felt that everything really faded out and turned just to a shimmery white. Since I was feeling pale, I then added blue liner to the bottom lashes and about a quarter of the top lash line to give more definition.

photo 2 (4)

Though there wasn’t a lot of fallout, I did not find the eye shadows to be anything spectacular. I also am not comfortable with this color palette- maybe if they were colors I felt were more user friendly, I would be a bit happier. One good thing is I did not have any eye irritation using the eye shadow, deeming it pretty safe for the tween and teen set.

I’m trying out the lipstick from the kit today. I’ll keep you posted.

Ringing in the Season with Studio Gear Holiday Smokey Eye Palette

studio1That’s a mouthful, no? Studio Gear’s Holiday Smokey Eye Palette is a “sultry, shimmery palette of dramatic shades perfect for creating a classic smokey eye look.” The palette contains four eye shadows and a blush to create a multitude of looks. photo 2 (18)

The palette is made of sturdy cardboard. When you open it up, there is a printed tutorial, along with the color layout of the palette. Personally, I think the names of the eye shadows and blush should have been printed below each pigment rich color but I don’t rule the world.

photo 1 (21)

Top colors are Frost & Coal, Middle is Snowy Glow Blush, and the bottom colors are Platinum and Glimmer

photo 3 (18)I tried using the tutorial but  having little patience and plans for the evening, I did what I wanted. I started by using an eye primer (NYX HD Eye Shadow Base) and brushed Platinum all over the lid. I then took my brush and added Coal into the crease. I brought the color around onto the outer part of my lid. I highlighted the brow bone with Frost. The colors were a little icy so I dipped my blender brush in Glimmer and dusted it lightly over everything, while softening the look. Using a fluffy blush brush, I applied a very small amount of Snowy Glow to my cheeks.

I didn't do this.

I didn’t do this.

I did do this.

I did do this.

I think that Studio Gear’s Holiday Smokey Eye Palette is a quality product. The eye shadows and blush are very pigmented. Using minimal amounts had big color pay-off. I had to be careful with the blush, since I am rosy. I really used very little of each color and I think they worked well. I am not sure if the palette is worth $25 on their website but if you want a no-brain smokey eye look, this palette could be for you. Studio Gear is also offering 10% for Product Hoochie readers at StudioGearCosmetics.com. Just enter SGHOLIDAY at checkout. FYI: the code doesn’t expire and is good for your entire order.

Yes, that is Joe Manganiello in the flesh! He was signing his new book Evolution at my local bookstore. He was very gracious, especially when I mentioned I saw him perform in A Streetcar Named Desire. Clearly, my new eye look had something to do with this stare…

Princess Tag!

The gorgeous Melissa over at Pink Lady Beauty tagged me in the Princess Tag! I love, love, love high-end products so this tag is totally for me!

FOUNDATION: I’m not crazy for foundation but I do use Bare Minerals Original SPF Foundation. I think it tends to control the oil on my face the best.

CONCEALER: Honestly, I don’t use much concealer either. I currently have been giving Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil a go around my eyes. I find that it really lightens up the area nicely.

Lighten up.

Lighten up.

POWDER: Back to Bare Minerals. Their READY Touch Up Veil Broad Spectrum SPF 15 helps sop up the grease that accumulates on my face. (I sound just like a princess, don’t I?)

BRONZER: Too Faced’s Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer is my favorite hands down. It smells all cocoa-y AND is matte so my sun-kissed glow doesn’t also channel a disco ball.

The top right picture is with flash and bottom without.

The top right picture is with flash and bottom without.

BLUSH: Currently it is Benefit’s Hervana. There is something about that pink and purple swirl that makes me happy!

It's a pinwheel!

It’s a pinwheel!

HIGHLIGHTER: The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer is seriously pigmented but when used correctly leaves skin with a beautiful shimmery sheen.

Get detained for being cute. Bottom picture is no flash.

Get detained for being cute. Bottom picture is no flash.

EYESHADOW: I love eye shadow. I love my Urban Decay Naked II palette– their eye shadows are smooth like buttah! Bobbi Brown eye shadows come in a close second. They blend beautifully.

In the nude.

In the nude.

EYELINER: Tarina Tarantino’s Eye Dream Hyperline goes on smooth and is super pigmented. Even on the most humid day, it does not slide off. And the colors are gorgeous! For a cheaper ($9!!!) yet high end version, Sephora Collection Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear Waterproof stays put all day with color vibrancy that puts any other HD eye product to shame.

Draw the line.

Draw the line.

Mascara: Benefit They’re Real Mascara pumps lashes up to 40s starlet status.

Lash out!

Lash out!

Lip Pencil: I rarely use a lip pencil so I keep Too Faced’s Borderline Anti-feathering Lip Pencil on hand. It is a clear wax pencil that keeps borders clean and it won’t alter your lip color.

LIPSTICK I have way too many to list BUT my one high-end favorite brand is Lipstick Queen. Sinners are 90% pigment and they are loaded with shea butter making for super moisturizing, super saturated color.

Love the bag, the tube, the box!

Love the bag, the tube, the box!

LIP GLOSS: Ummm…. I have been on a lipstick kick but Clinique Chubby Sticks offer up good glossy color.

BROW PRODUCT: Benefit’s Gimme Brow is a gel base formula that goes on with a short mascara brush. I received testers when I had the Lash Bash a few weeks ago and kept the lighter color for myself. It is a little light but if I work it right, it’s great!

IMG_0281
MISCELLANEOUS PRODUCT: This is not high end but I will pretend (just like a good princess) and sing the praises of NYX HD Eye Shadow Base. No one needs to know it is budget!

photo 4 (1)

NAIL POLISH: Sorry, guys, but I refuse to buy any more nail polish over $10 a bottle. I find the quality to be worse than the cheaper drugstore brands. I have to save my money somewhere.

Keeping It #Realsies! Prepping for the Benefit #LashBash!

Hey all! This past Saturday, I was one of 1,000 throwing a Benefit #LashBash, sponsered by Benefit and ipsy. I just want to share a few photos of my prep for a girls’ night in! Bat those lashes and take a peek!

Our “real” reason for the #LashBash!

I received small tubes for each of my guests!

I received small tubes for each of my guests!

I started by setting up my apartment. Though it is pretty spacious by NYC standards, I was having seven guests plus the hubs- he hid in his office but treated for pizza. He is the best!  Anyhoo- my coffee table was a beauty extravaganza. I set up sample and perfume tester stations for my guests to play with and take home to try before they buy!

Here is a shot of the whole table.

Stuff I Tried This Week x4

I have been a little MIA this week and I am sorry. We just have a lot going on and have been so busy that I haven’t had a chance to really give any solid and full reviews. SITW includes a few things that I used for the first time or gave another chance. On with it!

Face SPF 20 Coola Mineral Sunscreen Rose Tinted Moisturizer:

coola1

I think I received this in either a Birchbox or ipsy bag. I had another Coola product but had given it away and was slightly curious about this. The formula is very thin. I found a little to go a long way.

coola2

With flash

With flash

I didn’t find it to be rose tinted- it was more luminizing than rosy. It didn’t have the best coverage but I don’t wear a lot of coverage anyway.  I started using it on Monday and it made my skin oily. I tried it again Tuesday-Thursday and my face could rival an oil slick. By Friday morning. I could feel a zit forming on the left side of my nose. It is one of those underground ones, too. It hurts. Needless to say, I threw the rest in the garbage. If you need a tinted SPF for your face, I would not recommend this one.

Ow.

Ow.

Wet n Wild Take On the Day Primer: I bought this a while back and when I first used it I wasn’t impressed. I recently finished a tiny tube of Too Faced Shadow Insurance and had this handy so I started using it again. At first I thought it was doing a decent job. A few days later, I noticed it wasn’t. My eye shadow became splotchy, and was on places other than my lid. I threw it out today and went back to my NYX HD Eye Primer. I missed it and decided that I would never stray again.

Julep Essential Cuticle Oil: I received this in that fancy Birchbox for CEW delivery. I own one Julep polish and it is super thin and has awful coverage. I also got a Julep polish with the cuticle oil. It is so thick that when I went for a mani/pedi, even the manicurist complained. I am underwhelmed by the cuticle oil, too. It comes in a roller ball and is supposed to “soften rough cuticles.” I would need vats of it. It dries very quickly, which on one hand (ha!) is good, but that means it isn’t sticking around to really moisturize. Julep Essential Cuticle Oil is really touted for daily use and is meant to be easy to carry with you. I do not have time to dab cuticle oil on my nails. Don’t waste $18 USD.

It does smell pretty.

It does smell pretty.

Cool Whip Cookies: I found a recipe floating around Facebook and then I did a little google search. Basically, you take any flavor cake mix you want, add an eight ounce container of thawed Cool Whip, and an egg. You mix it and get a nice cookie dough. You drop balls of dough into powdered sugar and throw them in a pre-heated 350 F degree oven. Then you let them cool and eat up. I made two versions- one using devil’s food cake mix (they taste like Archway Dutch Chocolate Cookies) and the other using white cake mix with lemon and lime zest (they remind me of those evil Lofthouse cookies that I love). I also chose not to throw the dough into powdered sugar. I just sprinkled a little on top before I baked. The results are delicious and since I used fat free Cool Whip, we are talking really light cookies.

These are the lemon/lime cookies. The cookies were the best thing I tried this week.

Did you do anything new this week? Let me know!

Stuff I Tried This Week (The Saga Continues)

And three times is a charm! I have a few things I tried this week that I think you need to know about!

Cutting Tubes

Do you realize how much you waste when you don't cut the bottles?

Do you realize how much you waste when you don’t cut the tubes?

I have cut my tubes before but this week I came to the end of more products. The Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream is a great buy and is fragrance free. It is an excellent moisturizer and super gentle because it is made for babies! I bought it when I had itchy winter skin on a BOGO and am finishing up my second tube. I cut this tube the other night and there are maybe 3-4 uses left. The Etude House Baking Powder Cleansing Foam Moist was sent with a KollectionK order and I fell in love with it. It gets super foamy and I really feel clean after using it. I bought a full size but by cutting this tube,  I will get a few more washes. FYI: I usually put the leftovers in reusable travel jars but I was feeling lazy. I figure for a few days, these should be fine.

Nuance by Salma Hayek Lights, Camera, Action Eye Trio in Bronze/ Gold Shimmer:

Don't blink or you'll miss it.

Don’t blink or you’ll miss it.

Okay. I got this in an extra FREE Birchbox a few months back and have used it a few times. There is a liquid eye shadow (the bronze product on the left), a white highlighter stick in the middle, and an eye pencil on the right. I recently discovered the eye pencil. It was really wedged in the tube and I finally figured out that it wasn’t only the twist up. Anyhoo, I was disappointed the first few times I used it, especially with the liquid bronze eye shadow. I am still disappointed. Even with a primer, this stuff disappears. Like total David Copperfield. Or Houdini. The eye pencil and white highlighter are okay, though.

Shadow, highlighter, pencil (me in.)

Shadow, highlighter, pencil (me in.)

Drugstore Perfume (or eau de toilette): I have enough fragrance to open a store but when I was getting a pedicure last week, I found an article about celebrity perfume. I have a dirty little secret. I wear Usher for Woman. I love Usher as a musician- he is super talented- but, man, his perfume?! My sister, Shazzer, bought me a bottle for Christmas and told me that I was going to be surprised. I wear it. A lot. Back to celebrity fragrance… after reading the article, a few of the fragrance notes caught my eye and I decided I would give them a sniff. Walgreens had 20% off beauty this week and I managed to find Celine Dion Signature and S by Shakira. I won’t get into them now (expect a full review sometime this week) BUT I think you need to check out your local drugstore for fragrances. I also got both for about $35 US.

Near... far... my hips don't lie.

\ Near… far… my hips don’t lie.

A Sock Bun

I am growing out my hair and am getting bored with it. That usually means that I would chop it all off BUT I am trying not to. The reason: sock buns. I love the way they look and they seem easy to do. I bought a two pack of medium size sock bun makers (?) at 5 Below  two weeks ago and used it today. The concept is simple. Put your hair in a ponytail high on your head. Then take the sock bun maker (I really have no idea what to call it. You would think I’d look it up.) and pull your ponytail through it. Tuck the ends around the doughnut looking thing and you have a bun! My hair stayed all day and looked pretty good. The picture is proof- I took it at the end of the day.

I've got buns.

I’ve got buns.

That’s it for now. I wonder what I will tell you about next Sunday!

Stuff I Tried This Week (Episode II)

I am trying to decide if I should continue with the “Stuff I Tried This Week” posts.  I use a lot of different products and I guess mini-reviews of certain ones might be good. Sometimes a bit of snap judgement is better. Let’s have a look at the lot, shall we?

If you think I am totally faithful to beauty products, you haven't read much of this blog.

If you think I am totally faithful to beauty products, you haven’t read much of this blog.

Kevyn Aucoin The Eyelash Curler ($21 US): I actually received this in the Barneys Beauty Bag last fall and put it away because the one beauty item that I have not changed in over ten years must be my Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler. They have been harder to come by since Shu Uemura is no longer sold in stores in the USA. (You can still order them online.) Anyway, I got the Aucoin and figured “what the heck?” I have to say that it is a good eyelash curler. It doesn’t have as much tension as the Shu Uemura but it does a better than decent job of curling my lashes. I also like that the lash pad is red so you can see that you get all your lashes under the clamp (terrible word.) I will use this until I can no longer use it or I will switch it up with my spare Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler. (Come on. I made sure I ordered one before they disappeared from the shores!)

See the red lash pad?

See the red lash pad?

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer ($30 US): Before I get into this one, I have to tell you that Too Faced now makes two chocolate soleil bronzers, one called “milk chocolate” and one that is “medium/ deep.” I think this falls into the latter category but I bought this mini one around Christmas from Sephora. It was maybe $15 US and came with an adorable travel brush. This bronzer really is natural looking and has no orange undertones or shimmer (the sun makes you golden, not gold trophy-esque!). There is a slight scent of chocolate but it is pleasant and not overpowering.  I got into using Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer this summer and I love it. I brush it along the perimeter of my face with a medium brush. I read somewhere (I think Allure) that you should do this in “tight” circles and not use a fluffy brush.

The top right picture is with flash and bottom without.

The top right picture is with flash and bottom without.

The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer aka “The Luminizer” ($24 US): I ordered this from HauteLook during their last The Balm cosmetics sale. I think I paid $12 US. (There is actually The Balm on HauteLook now until Monday 8 AM Pacific Time. Go to my “Tell Them I Sent Ya” page for a referral link.)  I was a little afraid when I saw this because it is serious shimmer. It is very pigmented and a little does go a long way but it really is pretty. When I do my bronzer trick, I lightly apply this Mary on the bridge of my nose and on the apples of my cheeks. It really lights up the face and doesn’t look chalky.

Get detained for being cute. Bottom picture is no flash.

Get detained for being cute. Bottom picture is no flash.

Wet n Wild Pop Art Craze Limited Edition Color Icon Eye Shadow Trio in Hard Being the It Girl ($2.99 US): I was really excited to find these at Walgreens for $2.99 a trio. The colors are vibrant and fun. I also like how the trios aren’t all “wild” colors and have a neutral thrown in. I think a neutral makes them more wearable. Hard Being the It Girl has a beige for the lid, a blue for the crease, and pink for the browbone. I used Too Faced Shadow Insurance and followed right along. I know a lot of reviewers love Wet n Wild eye shadows but in all honestly, I don’t.  I think there is quite a bit of fall out and you need to use a lot of product to get big color. This is maybe the third or fourth set of WnW eye shadows I have purchased and I just don’t find them to be as great as the rest of the line.  I will use this palette and will just be more heavy handed but in my (humble) opinion, it isn’t the best.

Left and middle pictures are with flash. I didn't flash the one on the right.

Left and middle pictures are with flash. I didn’t flash the one on the right.

Wet n Wild Ultimate Brow Kit in Ash Brown ($3.99 US): I do my own eyebrows and decided I should start filling them in here and there since some parts are a bit sparse. I picked this up because it has two shades of brown and I blend both to get a good match for my caterpillars. The little hard angle brush actually does a decent job, though I find I need to soften the color with my fingertip. The soft wax helps keep brows in place and the little tweezers are great for strays- though I’m not really sure how well they work since I have my regular tweezer nearby.

The kit is a little hard to open and the mirror is hidden on the side and slides out.

What do you think of my experiments this week? Have you tried anything new?

HauteLook Summer Essentials Are Pretty Necessary

A week or two ago, I wrote a post about the HauteLook with Nordstrom Summer Beauty Bag. (You can check out that post here.) I was totally annoyed, as the bag was $29 US and had mostly “deluxe” samples.  About a week later, HauteLook released its Summer Essentials bag and I ordered it. For $20,  I thought it might just be better. Lucky for me, it was.

What have you got in there?

What have you got in there?

There are 13 products in the Summer Essentials bag and though many are fun size, the full size products up the retail value of the bag. I’ll start off with skin and body care. For the face,  there is a small jar of Miracle 10 AHA Cream. An exfoliator for dry skin, this soothing cream is supposed to bring on even skin texture and fight aging. I will use this eventually but not during the summer. My skin has a tendency to burn, so even putting gentle AHAs on my face frightens me. (Interested in trying Miracle10? Visit Miracle10.com to get Super C & AHA Cream for $82 US. Enter promocode HAUTEBAG13)

Another miracle?

Another miracle?

Yay! Another self-tanning product. I have so many tubes and sheets of glow goop that I don’t even know what to do with it. This single TanTowel is good for half body application and can even be used on the face. I loved the spray on one I used last week (there are still remnants on my legs) but I might just have to try a sheet, too. (Hey- don’t you want to know what happens?)

Vacation in a towel.

Vacation in a towel.

In order to keep your faux tan looking glowing and not blech, slather on Whish Body Butter in Orange Cream. I have tried Whish Shave Cream and the scent was reminiscent of Fruity Pebbles. This tiny tube will be good to throw in a getaway bag but I have a feeling there will be no getaways this summer. L’Occitane Shea Hand Cream is a cult classic and a little goes a long way.  Cooler weather will be here before we know it, so this will come in handy. (Handy- get it?)

Creamy.

Creamy.

I love Diptyque fragrance because though they are complex, they are magically singular. I find the fragrances to truly smell so natural on the body and wear Eau Duelle, a spicy vanilla, I now have a sample of L’Ombre dans l’Eau, which translates to The Shadow in the Water. On first spray, it is very green but rounds out to a floral with rose and blackcurrant. It actually reminds me of a perfume I used to wear but can no longer recall. Such is life!

Secret like a shadow.

Secret like a shadow.

Your crowning glory is up next. Blow Pro After Blow Strong Hold Finishing Spray is a quick dry spray that claims to keep frizz and flyaways at bay. I probably will never find out if this spray works but it sounds good.

Blow Pro then Grab and Go!

Blow Pro then Grab and Go!

I’m loving L. Erickson Grab n’ Go Pony Compact. The compact isn’t very sturdy but it holds a few ponytail elastics in a place where they won’t get lost in my bag. Thank goodness.

Onto the make-up! Start off with great brushes. Since I love my Crown Brushes, I was happy to receive their Travel Brush Set. I don’t like to bring my big brushes on the go and  this set will make it easy.  I am also curious to try Lashfood Nano-Peptide Natural EyeLASH Conditioner. It is supposed to make my lashes stronger. After the lash perm I tried last year, I think this is a safer option.

Long lashes, little brushes.

Long lashes, little brushes.

For some more lash love, there is a tube of LORAC Special Effects Mascara in Black. One side has a primer and the other has a lengthening mascara. I remember when Revlon had a mascara like this many years ago and I miss it so this should be fun to try out.

Long and lovely lashes.

Long and lovely lashes.

Now, we go from lashes to lips. There are three lip products in the bag and they are pretty fabulous. First in line is an NYX Lip Smacking Fun Color Lipstick in #597 Margarita. It looks more like a watermelon margarita to me, as it is a shimmery pink-orange shade. This lipstick is in the round tube and is under $4 US. I love NYX lipstick and am more than happy to add this to my collection.

The bonus in the bag is a Mirenesse Lip Bomb Glossy Lacquer Stain in #27. It is a coral that errs on orange I’m guessing it is a gloss that will impart shine and stain the lip for lasting color. I have another lip product from Mirenesse that I really like, Maybe one of these day I will do a comparison.
